It’s Broadway’s biggest night! And we here at the GROHNs want to make sure you are properly prepared for the the pagentry!
After last seasons stacked field of new musicals, we have 4 new shows in the ring that made it past opening night reviews that are looking for Tony gold:
Schmigadoon – 12 Nominations
Two normal humans have found themselves trapped in a golden-age musical, where the petticoat clad locals barrel kick and tap dance their way through parody plot points from classics like Oklahoma, Carousel, and the Sound of Music:
The Lost Boys – 12 Nominations
This adaptation of the 80’s Vampire cult classic comes with a rock score and bleached mullets. Come for Shoshanna’s belting, stay for the amazing tech:
Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) – 8 Nominations
An adorable rom com about cake! Actually, mostly about how adorable Sam Tutty is.
Titaníque – 4 Nominations
This wacky off-broadway parody musical has made it uptown, and yes an iceberg just might win a Tony!
But a lot of the strongest noms are from our Best Revival Nominees:
Ragtime – 11 Nominations
Sadly a musical written in the 1990’s about racism in the 1900’s is still current. But the dream casting and full orchestra has every broadway nerds creaming themselves.
Cats: The Jellicle Ball – 9 Nominations
Reimagining Cats into 80’s Ballroom somehow makes Cats seem like it has a plot! Death drops, vogueing, and wigs for days, henny!
The Rocky Horror Show – 9 Nominations
A starry revival to celebrate 50 years since this definition of cult-classic debuted! Come for Luke Evens crotch and chest, stay for Rachel Dratch’s master class in comedy.
Here’s the buzz we are tracking closely!
A Ragtime Circle Jerk?
Ragtime has been the toast of the broadway town given its lauded City Center concert production last summer and rush into a full* production in the grand Lincoln Center tradition. It has pole position in most races. But given it is a weaker year, some of those 11 nominations can thank the small crop of new musicals. But we bet there were many Tony ballots turned in with a sweep in every category… our ballot gave them 1.
*Its still just a concert, just on a bigger stage with a bit of choreo and a few props and set pieces.
Can Cats pull off the upset?!?
Cats is a front runner for Costume design, but how many more can it pick up? Will voters reward Cats with Best Revival for actually doing something interesting with the title or will the Ragtime tidal wave shut them out? We here at GROHN Ass Opinions would definitely rather be at Cats right now, our ballot has 4 wins!
Choreography Showdown!
Will Schmigadoon’s precision homage of the golden age musical defeat queer vogueing cats? Both are very strong nominations but definitely from different sides of the spectrum!
What about plays?
Umm, we don’t talk about plays here. But we did see Laurie Metcalf in full radiant form in Death of a Salesman. We here at the GROHNs don’t remember the music despite that production getting a Best Score nomination – a slap in the face to snubbed Stephen Schwartz (for Queen of Versailles) who still has never won a competitive Tony award.
Who’s going to win Best Musical?
With so few new musicals even eligible, and revivals taking up a lot of the air in the room, who’s coming up big this year? While not quite as deep a field as last season, we won’t be sad to see any of them win! We here at the GROHNs still haven’t made our choice in that category, it should be an interesting night!
